Play Vanity

I know it is only September, but if you are going to be making presents for Christmas, now is the perfect time to start!

Last year I made my daughter a play vanity.

I used the stash of wood my father-in-law gave me.  I measured and cut the wood.... (this is the same stash of wood that I used to make my narrow cottage end tables)

You can see in the picture my stockings hanging...well I started this project a little...late.

In case you are wondering about the plans for this build, I got them off of my favorite site Ana White, you can see the plans here.   From the pile of wood above, this is what I ended up with...

I added the support between the shelves with my kreg jig.   The top moulding is a half inch too short, but I was on a free budget with this present and this was the only moulding I had.  It works!  My sweet little girl never even noticed.

You can also see the spackling I used to fill in the cracks.  The wood was a little warped since it had been sitting in a shed for years.

Now on to priming...

See my headboard bench in the back ground?  I had built it first then the vanity and choose to prime at the same time.  What you can't see is the snow on my driveway...what was I thinking...Brrr!
Look how smart I am getting, I moved inside...ah warmth!  Now to paint.  I used a foam brush to get all the little cracks and edges...
Then I used a small foam roller to paint the rest!  I built most of this at night when the kids were in bed.  But to paint I had to lock myself in my room in short bursts, this was a Christmas present after all... My kids were a little suspicious.
I added some cheap baskets from Walmart (dang, I had to spend a little money, so much for the free budget, but it NEEDED baskets).

I cut some fun vinyl shapes and slapped them on.

And Viola!  Pretty Princess Vanity...
This shot was taken Christmas morning by the tree.  If you want to see my post on the cute stool you can HERE.

My daughter LOVED it!
In fact she spent hours and hours playing at it.  I was so glad.  She still loves to use it to this day which is even better!  If you look over to the left you can see a small corner of the mirror I redid for her.

And one more shot of our Pretty Princess...
Do you have plans to make any Christmas presents?  My advice....start now!  Don't wait until the last minute!

Check out my post on the cute stool Here.

Lots of love,
Mindi

I will be linking to these parties.

  1. Adorable! What little girl wouldn't love to play dress up at that- and will be a great memory mom made it for her.
