Rustic Candle Holder Tutorial

Can you believe it is almost Thanksgiving?  I am convinced that the older I get the faster time seems to fly!

While this is not a Thanksgiving project I can't seem to shake the vision of it adding to the table feast decor.

I had the idea to make this for almost a year now, but the problem was I couldn't find anything that would work for the metal legs I wanted.  Nothing.

I finally gave in and made it anyway, and created some faux metal legs, they aren't my fave, or what I was envisioning, but they will work for now!

Do you remember this wood?  I used it when I turned an end table into a desk and on my Reclaimed Wood Table.  It is wood from old benches around my town and some of them were not square, which is where the inspiration come from.  I loved the shape.  So I cut it to a nice long length, just over 38 inches, and I tapered the ends at a 10 degree bevel to match.

Next, I got my candles that I purchased at the dollar store, and laid them out to where I thought they looked good, and traced around them so I knew where to drill.  Then I found a drill bit that was the same width as the candle.

Using the candle as a guide, I taped off the drill bit so I knew how deep to drill.  It is amazing how much sawdust this creates!

I used these little candlesticks I got at Hobby Lobby, with a 40% off coupon.  I spray painted them with Oil Rubbed bronze, to give it the metallic look.  Then I pre drilled holes into each candlestick.

I also predrilled holes into the wood piece on each side.  Then I just screwed them together.  I could have easily just glued them together, but I wanted to be able to take it apart, just incase the perfect legs appear someday!  I guess I should also note that I did do a coat of laquer after I drilled the holes and sanded it down.  It gives it more of a finished look.

At this point I thought I was done, but since it wasn't quite as sturdy as I wanted it, you know just in case I decide to actually light the candles, I don't want it tipping over and burning the house down. :)  I am thinking electric ones might be the way to go anyway... I decided to add some wooden bases that I also spray painted.  They were at Hobby Lobby for only 79 cents each.

Much better, it is nice and sturdy now!  I actually just hot glued the legs to the round bases. You can see I also drilled a hole in the middle for another leg, but it didn't look good with three legs, so I just left it with two.

I can't wait for Thanksgiving it will totally boost the cozy feel at the table!  Do you like to use candles at the table?
