How to build a Floating Night Stand
Out of a 1x8x8 board
Floating Night Stand Building Plans, MyLove2Create

Materials:
  • One 1x8 8 foot board
  • 1 1/4 inch pocket hole screws
  • Wood glue
  • Sand paper
Tools:
  • Miter saw or circular saw
  • Jig saw
  • hand sander
  • table saw or Kreg Rip Cut
  • Kreg Jig
  • Drill and driver
Step 1:
cut diagram for floating night stand
Cut the board according to the above diagram.  You will end up with four boards cut at 17'' and two cut at 12'' long.  The board is 7 1/4 wide.

Step 2:
rip board for floating night stand
Using a table saw, or if you don't have one like me, I used my Kreg Rip-Cut and Ryobi Circular Saw. Rip two of the 17'' long boards at 4 3/4''.   The two 4 3/4 boards will be attached to 17'' boards to make the top and bottom of the shelf.  The left over 2 1/2'' pieces will be used for back support boards.
using Kreg Rip cut
Umm, I love this tool!

Step 3:
attaching board with pocket hole screws
Drill pocket holes into each 17'' and 4 3/4'' board then attach them together with wood glue and pocket hole screws, to make the top and bottom of your night stand.

Step 4:
Floating Night Stand Building Plans, MyLove2Create
Make sure to drill pocket holes for attaching the sides to the top and bottom.

Step 5:
marking edges for x pattern on floating night stand
Take both 12" boards and use a scrap piece of 3/4 thick wood to mark all four sides of the boards.

x pattern measurements
Use the above measurements to help you create your x pattern.  Then cut out the middle triangles with a jigsaw, drilling holes into the triangles first to start your cuts.

Step 6:

With all your pieces cut you are ready to build!
Floating Night Stand Building Plans, MyLove2Create
Start by attaching one side piece at a time to the top piece with pocket hole screws and wood glue.  Make sure the top boards pocket holes will be on the inside of the night stand, so you can't see them.

Step 7:

Attach the bottom piece to the sides making sure the pocket holes are on the bottom.

Step 8:
Drill pocket holes into support boards, I used my Kreg K5 Pocket-Hole Jig to do mine.

Add the back support pieces in the back with the pocket holes facing the back.

Step 9:

Finish as desired, and attach the floating night stand to the wall with 3 inch self tapping screws directly into a stud in the wall on one side.  Use wall anchors and 2 inch screws to attach the other side, make sure to pre drill first if your screws are not self tapping.

That is it you are done!!  Now enjoy your new floating night stand!

  12. Looks great. I like this wooden project very much. It is really great idea to make our home furnished with woods. I think you should paint it. The white color is more beautiful.

  13. Sand all the surfaces in order that everything is extremely swish. Use a power tool to complete that task.In case you are doing not would like to create your own table, merely obtain a decent one that you just can assemble yourself.

  14. Looks great. I like this wooden DIY project very much. Your coffee table look so cute. I’m doing some research on DIY projects. I want to do something like that for my family. But I have no idea now. Thanks for sharing your idea.

  15. I'm a 76 year old woman living alone and just came across your page by chance. I've been thinking for weeks how I could make some sort of bedside shelf that would allow me to open the drawer in the bed base without having to pull out the night stand...! This is perfect, and doesn't look too difficult for me to do. So thanks for popping up just in time....! Nadia in Perth, Western Australia

    1. Thank you Tom! I made two of these in one day, not sure how many hours, I am always stopping and starting again to help the kids! Of course, it took another day to stain and add my top coats. But it really is a simple build! I hope you make one and please share if you do! Thanks for stopping by!

  19. Great looking night stands. How did you get the stain so dark. Pre conditioner, 2nd or third coats? Thanks

  20. So I am trying this project but I am stuck at making the sides. I can get the jigsaw from getting jagged lines. Can you give me some advice?

  21. I cannot seem to figure out how to measure the x pattern. Could you possibly get angles or a video on how you made them

  22. My boyfriend and I made these for our bedroom. One thing we found hard was cutting out the “x” patterns. We found it easier to cut the “x’s” out from a larger piece of word, rather than having the 3/4 inch sides to clamp onto and rearranging the clamps every few seconds. They look great and were a fun project!
